Subjected to Etna's fickle temperament, Catania has been damaged by lava flows and earthquakes on several occasions. A particularly destructive volcanic eruption in 1669 was followed by a serious earthquake in 1693.
Founded by the Siculi and colonized by the Greeks in 729 BC, Catania was conquered by the Romans in AD 263, eventually becoming the most prosperous city in Roman Sicily.
Catania has a lot of Roman monuments as the amphitheater, the greek-roman theatre, the nearby Odeum and several thermal bath complexes.
We will discover the charming fish market where we will make a nice tasting of typical product and then we will arrive to the Ursino Castle, used to be a coastal fortress before volcanic eruptions extended the coastline and built in the first half of the 13th century.
Catania is also famous for its beautiful black and white baroque style that we will discover into the Cathedral square with the Elephant which is the symbol of the city and the charming Cathedral dedicaded to St Agatha.
We will walk along the via Etnea which is the principal axe of the city and we will end our visit with another tasting of the typical "rosticceria" of Catania.
